Welcome To The Forge

This is where I am building stories in real time. Here, I share in-progress fiction, early drafts, and behind-the-scenes glimpses as I develop the fantasy world of The Song of the Realms.

You’ll see ideas take shape on the page: character threads, plot experiments, thematic notes, and the occasional wrong turn that teaches me something useful. This isn’t a portfolio of polished pieces; it’s an open invitation into the creative process. If you enjoy seeing how fiction is made-from spark to structure-you’re in the right place.

The Story Forge Studio
If you’ve found your way here, you probably know me, or enjoy stories. Either are good places to start.

That said, this site exists because I’m working on a project called The Song of the Realms—a long-form story that explores a world layered beneath our own. A world where light and darkness are more than metaphors, where myth might be memory, and where what we see isn’t always the full picture. At its core, it’s an attempt to explore elements of the spiritual realm—through story.

The Song of the Realms started with a single character and a love of the idea of magic living alongside our world as we know it. Then I asked myself a question: what would creation have been like from an observer’s perspective?

Everything expanded from there. At this point, I’m 421 pages of notes, 10 internal guidebooks (written for and to be referenced within the world), and 8 completed poetic chronicles deep into the project—and only now beginning the prose writing itself. That’s what this blog is for.

Here, you’ll find pieces of the story as they’re being written—rarely complete, mostly rough, and almost always in the process of change.

You’ll also find reflections on the ideas behind the story:
  • why the world works the way it does
  • what certain themes mean
  • and the questions I’m still trying to answer as I go

There are multiple sections on this website where I will be posting.  The Forging Table (for chapters of my work itself), The Chronicler's Desk (where all the other random thoughts, documents, deep dives, and all else writing related will be located), and The Sound of the Realms (where I am uploading audio versions of what different poems could sound like within the world as if performed by Wren the bard).  You can also find me on YouTube @penofthewordsmith under the name Kai Pen.  More is likely to come, but this is where we are at the moment.

One more thing. This isn’t meant to be one-sided. If something stands out to you—something you like, something that doesn’t quite work, or even just a question you have—I’d genuinely like to hear it. You don’t have to write a full critique. Even a sentence is enough.

At the end of the day, this is where I’m shaping the story of the Realms. And if you’re here, you’re welcome to be part of that process.

Last piece of housekeeping, I plan to publish at least one new “Chapter” around the first of every month.

Let’s see where it goes.

The Artisans' Gallery

This gallery is dedicated to the artwork, illustrations, and creative interpretations that readers have contributed to the world of The Song of the Realms. Whether you're a seasoned artist or picked up a pencil for the first time because of a character you loved, I'd love to see it.

Ask the Bard

Curious about the world, the characters, or the story behind the story? Each month I will delve into my archived questions and find some of the answers for you!

About Me
Hi, I'm Kai Pen— a storyteller, a dreamer, and a stay-at-home mom born and raised in Minnesota.

I've been an author since I was eight years old, when I wrote my first chapter book series across three college-ruled notebooks and didn't look back. Long before I had words for it, I had stories — apparently even as a baby, I'd sit in my car seat and have my hands talk to each other. Some things never change.

Now, I'm twenty-five, married to a great guy, and mom to a little boy who keeps life full and loud. My husband is, in the best possible way, my opposite — the grounding to my creative flightiness. He has the instincts of a professional critic (think Rotten Tomatoes, but someone who actually loves you), and I rely on his seal of approval more than he probably knows.

The Song of the Realms is the project closest to my heart. It has grown out of my own life story, my imagination, and my faith — because I love Jesus, and I believe that when we genuinely encounter Him, things really do change. That conviction is woven into the DNA of this world: the fractures, the longing, the slow and costly work of restoration. These aren't just fantasy themes to me. They're personal ones.

If you've found your way here, I'm glad. Pull up a chair.

The Voice is still singing, and there's a lot of story left to tell.

Whether you're just stepping into the world of The Song of the Realms for the first time or you've been here long enough to have opinions about the Courts — I want to hear from you. Submit your question below and I'll answer a few of them each month in a post!
